I remember seeing pics of this in a magazine of the day. I was actually
wondering a few months ago what happened to it.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Mid-engine 429 Mustang

Yet another experiment by FOMOCO back in the late '60s. This one took a
'Boss' 429 and a C-6, added a four-wheel drive transfer case and stuck it in
the rear of a Mustang fastback. The power package looks like a Toronado
front clip and in fact might have worked better that way. The rear glass was
converted to hatchback operation for engine access, and to make the
concoction work as shown, the engine must have gotten a reverse-grind boat
cam and matching reversed starter.
It's a sparse 1-pg photo-story in Feb 'Muscle Car Review', the photos having
come from an unpublished Car Craft photo-shoot back in 1970. With skinny
bias-ply rear tires, stock suspension (except for rear coil-overs) and the
obvious rear weight bias, this thing must have not needed much driving to
convince Ford it was NOT a 'Better Idea' than the upcoming mid-engine
Pantera.
Mildly interesting mechanism; my son gave me the issue. Cheers-J DeRyke
