[DeTomaso] Mid-engine 429 Mustang

Yet another experiment by FOMOCO back in the late '60s. This one took a 
'Boss' 429 and a C-6, added a four-wheel drive transfer case and stuck it in 
the rear of a Mustang fastback. The power package looks like a Toronado front 
clip and in fact might have worked better that way. The rear glass was 
converted to hatchback operation for engine access, and to make the concoction 
work as shown, the engine must have gotten a reverse-grind boat cam and 
matching reversed starter. 
It's a sparse 1-pg photo-story in Feb 'Muscle Car Review', the photos 
having come from an unpublished Car Craft photo-shoot back in 1970. With skinny 
bias-ply rear tires, stock suspension (except for rear coil-overs) and the 
obvious rear weight bias, this thing must have not needed much driving to 
convince Ford it was NOT a 'Better Idea' than the upcoming mid-engine Pantera. 
Mildly interesting mechanism; my son gave me the issue. Cheers-J DeRyke
