[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 79, Issue 1

Hi All,

I'm in the process of refitting the air con to my Pantera. Its 40 degrees
C in Sydney today so its becoming an important upgrade if I actually want
to drive my car.. When I bought my car the air con had been removed
(apparently its a lot cooler in Michigan!) but the previous owner was kind
enough to provide all the bits and the evaporator is still under the dash.
What are the must do's to make sure this system works? From my research
I see a Sanden 508 compressor and adaptor plate is a must but can I live
with the condensor and evaporator as standard? I've also read that a
stronger fan would help but not too sure if this is a must do.

With the current strong Aussie dollar I plan to purchase an R134 hose kit
from one of the US based suppliers as I figure these will be more
convenient to fit myself - does anyone have any particular preference or
is the quality of hoses the same across the market?

This is my first post - I certainly enjoy reading the mails that come in
each morning when I get to the office and have learned quite a bit
already. Thanks for the wealth of info. cheers Gary

I watched the coverage last night. I could have sworn that kit sold for
$45,000.

Not $40,000.

That's definitely a 351C, with an Edelbrock Torker manifold....
-------------------

Mike, are you referring to the auction car, red in color, with the Ford
blue engine block and heads?

If that is a Cleveland - link to the photo here:

http://tinyurl.com/auction-Torker

Then where is the oil sender boss at the rear of the block?

The intake is for a Windsor.

It's simpler thatn all that, simply count the valve cover bolts, a
Cleveland
had 8, a Windsor has 6,

Just checked again on the mecum site. Lot U74, '73 Pantera shows as
selling for $40K. This does not include the buyer commission.

Actually I think you're both part right.

Those are definitely 351C style heads but without the rear oil sender it
has
to be either a 351W or an SVO block which is a Windsor-Cleveland hybrid
that
uses a 351C crank but with a 351W oiling system, oil pan and front
aluminum
cover. This engine appears to have the 0.3" shorter deck height of a 351C
so I'm betting it's an SVO block that's been decked to the 351C height and
thus is using a 351C type intake. That's why the intake's covering of the
block's rear valley rail doesn't quite match up (see how it hangs over the
rail?). This is because the SVO uses the rail of the 351W which is a
reverse "S" of the 351C. This means they had to add (heliarc) material to
the front and rear of the intake to get it to seal.

The oil sender might be deleted at the back deck with a plug in its
place. There is a oil port near the front of the block that could be
used for another sender.

My vote goes to a windsor style block with cleveland heads.

The rear of the block doesn't look right for a cleveland block, even if
you ignore the intake.

Here are some photos of a 351W block for comparison:

On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz filed a Patent No. 37435 at the Reich
Patent
Office in Berlin - it is generally regarded as the birth certificate of
the
automobile and became the first of over 80,000 patents to the Mercedes
Benz
marquee. Benz' Patent Motor Car was equipped with a horizontal
single-cylinder four-stroke engine, which developed an output of 0.55 kW
at
400 rpm from a displacement of 954 cubic centimeters. The vehicle's top
speed was 16 km/h. Happy birthday to the automobile and congratulations to
the company which today remains at the forefront of personal
transportation.

No doubt the California Car Covers are top shelf, but if you don't want to
spend
that much money, Pontiac Fiero car covers are purported to be an exact fit
for
narrow body non-winged cars. I believe Jack DeRyke uses one.

It appears to be a Windsor block (bulges out at the rear) with a
pair of Cleveland heads. The intake is interesting. It appears
to be a 351C Torker but has an end seal shaped like a Windsor, not
a Cleveland. However, it overhangs the end seal. I wonder if an
extension was welded on? Another possibility is it's an A331 high
port version of the Torker but that would require the cylinder head
intake ports to be stuffed to seal properly. Most of the Motorsport
intakes were set up to go on either Windsor or Cleveland type blocks
but I've never seen a Windsor version of the Edelbrock A331 Torker
look-a-like.

I bought a Pantera-specific car cover (canvass top with felt lining)
from Larry Stock and it is awesome! It fits my '72 Pre-L perfectly.

Highly recommended!

Does anyone have experience with the various car protection covers
listed on
eBay?
Many of the listings are quite cheap in my opinion, from $20.00 and
up...
Are they maybe of bad quality and useless?
Appreciate info if I should avoid any of them especially.
Any links to other good car covers?
Cheers Bjoern

Aren't we talking about quality and not fit issues? Depending on the
choice of fabric a Fiero cover is $20-30 cheaper than a Pantera cover at
California Car Covers, why take a chance for that small saving? Put it
into perspective.... a top of the line Cal Car cover is around $300, a
mere 1% or less of the value of your Pantera and likely less than your
local paint shop guy is going to put paint in his gun for touch up.

Of course on the flipside a roll of polyethylene dust sheet is only $15 at
your local Lowes or Home Depot.......

I want to throw a shout out to SO Bill. I put the cat on the rack this
weekend to install my new high torque starter from DB Electrical. I took
Bill's E-mail were he talked about doing the job. Less than 2hr's later
just like he said I was ready to rock and roll. The hardest part was to
fit the old starter out from between the block and the headers. After much
twisting and turning and saying bad things I took the cover off the
starter and it came out. All hooked up and what difference. Thanks to all
that have posted about this amazing up grade. Torque On. Mike

I want to add that I just bought a nice 130 amp FORD 3G alternator

NEW Ford Mustang 3.8L Alternator 94-2000 AFD0032

from DB Electrical for $76 and I am very pleased with it.

It works much better than the same one I bought a few years ago from a
local
shop
for $260!

This model of 3G works well on a Pantera. I put a helicoil in the top hole
so I could use the original locking bolt, but you could just do an
"upgrade"
to a sloppy bolt and nut arrangement and it would still work OK. Of
course,
you also need to deal with the wiring.

The starters I got from them are also great.

Barry (the numbers match on my Pantera - eat your heart out!)

Or maybe a 351W, 351C heads, and a B&A Track Boss intake.

Barry,

Did you change the alternator pulley, or are you using the serpentine
belt?

Hi John
I'm using a new single groove 2.6" pulley on the alternator. It needs the
belt nice and snug, but seems OK so far. Got about 70 amps at idle.
Regulator turns on about 5-600 engine rpm. I had a lot of trouble with the
first 3G that I got locally, so I'm really hoping this one from DB
continues
to work so well. So far, so good.
Barry

>>>Fascinating--I do believe you're right!

I thought the Torker was only available for the 351C, but clearly it was
at
one time available for the 351W too--news to me!

The engine in the photo appears to have De Tomaso Cleveland valve covers,
which would imply Cleveland heads, which would imply a Cleveland. But
the
lack of the oil pressure sender is a dead giveaway that it's a Windsor
block.
Cleveland heads on a Windsor block maybe?

Or were these flat-top valve covers available for the Windsor too, at one
time? I don't ever rememer seeing these valve covers on a Windsor. But
if
so, then the logical conclusion is that this engine is 100% Windsor, as
stated.

Interesting!

Thanks Larry! :>)

Possibly, but then there's no need for what appears to be a modified rear
edge of the intake manifold so my bet is still on it being an SVO block.

The oil sender might be deleted at the back deck with a plug in its
place. There is a oil port near the front of the block that could be
used for another sender.
