[DeTomaso] Front Caliper Rebuild

I'm currently rebuilding a pair of front calipers, and not  sure of the 
correct way to install the dust boots.  First, is it correct  (or easier) to 
put the boots and retaining rings on before you reinstall the  pistons?  Also, 
I seem to remember the retainers going on the  outside of the piston when 
disassembling, but logic tells me fitting them in the  groove would be more 
secure.  Any guidance would be most  appreciated.
