[DeTomaso] Needle Bearing Pilot Bushing Won't Budge

Dear Mike,

The Wet Toilet Paper Method for Pilot Bearing Removal

Take a sufficient amount of commonly available toilet
paper. ( High performance toilet paper is not required. ) Tear or cut it
into strips. Proceed to get the paper wet . Using fingers, needle nose
pliers or tweezers stuff the wet toilet paper through the bushing. Keep
pushing and stuffing. When packed, then take an appropriately sized socket
head that will just fit into the opening of the pilot bushing. Stuff the
inside of the socket with more wet toilet paper. Then place the filled
socket head with an extension into the pilot bushing opening. Take a
hammer and strike the extension. When done correctly, this odd concoction
of wet paper and socket and extension will pop the bushing out. Sometimes
it does take some further application of wet paper, etc. I hope that is
clear.

As I type this, I seem to recall that when I did it, it
worked best with strips of wet paper shop towels. Oh, well.

Good luck and good hydraulics, Chuck Engles
