I have an all metal sealed fuel filter and I carry a spare in my tool kit. I
had to change it once on the road.

Shouldn't be too had to trace an added fuel filter, as the gas tank is
right next to the engine making the lines short. In the 4bbl carb inlet(s)
behind the fuel-in fittings are Holley's infamous sintered-bronze filters
that
usually plug rapidly. Autolite & other carbs had tiny paper filters that do
the same thing. I recommend discarding all in-carb filters as they are just
too small. Once loaded up, you'll get unexplained lean-out, rough running
and
rev-limiting, all at random. If you have dirty gas locally, an external
filter can be fitted- as long as its not one of the glass bowl types that
crack!
I suggest one that has replaceable filters; Summit and Jegs (the Wal-Marts
of auto parts!) carry several kinds. Good luck- J Deryke
