Many of the gear drive starters and the stocker have a part of the 
bendix-drive that rises up just behind the upper fastener. A bolt simply will not go 
in. A few aftermarket assemblies will clear a bolt so it depends on what 
you expect to use. The stud has the advantage of fitting all types of 
starters, of course. As far as which stud, some starters- especially the gear drives 
made from Hitachi   assemblies - need a spacer for Panteras while others do 
not. The spacers requires a longer fastener. Are you trying to screw the 
new stud in with your fingers? I would double-nut the stud and use a wrench to 
get the 'old' and 'new' threads comfortable with each other.   FWIW- J
