Charles,
 
The others are right that your weatherstripping or strike
on your door may be holding the lock from turning.....
But I have had several that were just tightened down
too hard either internally or externally... trims on the inside
thumb lock or internal lock fastener that will prevent
the lock from turning freely... If it has been apart lately
then it may have been tighened up too much for things
to work properly... not all things in a door actually line
up correctly and this could cause it to bind
 
My neighbors lock just needed the cover on the
thumb turn inside to be loosened just slightly
they could not even use a key to go in the front
door... after having it taken apart several times I 
could see the cover bend slightly when tightened
