Theory and guesses aside, one way to tell for sure is to drop the oil pan
and shine a strong light up the cylinder bores to show the underside of the
pistons. Forged pistons NEVER have undercuts around and above the wristpin
bosses while cast or cast-hypereutectics always do. Sometimes, the piston p/n
is marked underneath.
Or, pull a head (ideally, two; some mechanics only fix what's broken and
send the engine down the road. I've seen motors with ONE .030-over piston and
7 more at std size) and clean off the crowns. There may be a mark or
something on the top to tell you the part number. Typically, forged piston p/n's
will be followed by 'F'. Good luck- J Deryke
