Some guys have done this by dropping a cheap cellphone with GPS inside a 
door. By calling up the phone's serial #, the thing can be tracked wherever 
there's cell phone coverage, with a program similar to Google Earth. I think I 
tead about at least one car the police recovered this way.
Not sure if the phone needs to be permanently on or not- which would 
quickly drain the phone's battery unless you added a wire off the car battery. And 
given the spotty cell coverage in some areas and the cost of a decent 
phone, the LOJACK might be a better solution even if its harder for you 
personally to trace your kid driving around in your car with it.... FWIW- J Deryke
