Well there you have it. Rim width is defined as the inside measurement.

The internal width was .5" narrower then the outside width including the
lip .25" lip on each side. My wheels did not have an "advertised size
(width) because they were custom made. I ordered wheels that were 9" wide an
they measure 9" in width internally (where the tire fits) but 9.5" if
measured externally outside edge to outside edge ( same thing with the rear
wheels) 12" internally but 12.5 outside edge. This did not present a problem
because the tires (235/40R/18) at the widest point are 9.57" ( approved rim
width's according to Nitto) 8.00" (8.50') 9.50") Rear 335/30ZR19are 13.31"
with an approved rim size's of 11.50" (12.00") 12.50" My wheels have a
reversed lip so they look flatter on the outside rim edge ( this may explain
the difference between the actual internal width and external width
measurements)

I've never come across a wheel that was off the advertised width by as

A rim that is quoted as 9" wide is really 9.5. The tire width is even
wider.
For instance my rear rims are 19" X12" the actual width is 12.5" and
the
width of the tire ( which is a whole other story) is 13.31". I have
Nitto
Nt-05's and my front tires are 235/40zr/18 which are actually 9.57"wide.
The
tire Mfg will tell you the rim size (minimum, optimal, and maximum
width )
that can be used for a particular size tire. On a narrow body car (like
mine) I believe you will be unable to use a front tire that is 275/40/17
,
if that were a nitto NT-o5 (I am using their size table) it would have
an
outside diameter of 25.59" and a width of 10.79, That is a bigger tire
in
both diameter and width then my 235/40/18 which has an outside diameter
of
25.43" and a width of 9.57". I had numerous contact problems. I had to
increase my caster by modifying my upper A-arms ( which brought my wheel
toward the back of the car) I had to roll my fender lips and I still had
contact problems at full lock with the windshield wiper motor cover (
which
I had to modify) This is with a tire that is only 9.57"wide Yours would
be
more then an inch wider at 10.57". Personally I don't think it's going
to
work out . Check the tire manufacturers specs for rim vs tire sizes so
you
will know what size rims you can use with your tires. I think you would
be
better off selling you front tires and going with a a different size
like a
225/40/17 or 235/40 /17 .When I replace my front tires I am going to
down
size to 225/40/18 which is also a smaller over all diameter (25.08"
9.06"
width) which will give me more of a down ward rake or slope which is
supposed to reduce high speed lift in the front of the car, and should
eliminate all my contact problems.
