[DeTomaso] Front Valence Question

Rob Pink (Rob Stewart on the list) and I are replacing the valence on the front of his Pantera with a Johnny Woods hand hammered replica.

Our challenge is how to best separate the lower grill mesh from the original valence.  While I had hoped there to be just a few spot welds, this marriage looks a little more secure.

Does anyone who has experience with this exercise have a suggestion for us?
