Good idea- if you have a 1971 crank & flywheel where the flywheel is
doweled to the crank. On later engines they left out the dowels so the flywheel
won't index perfectly onto the crank- hence your timing mark will shift a
little. Most guys that do this use #8 cylinder to check timing so you don't need
6 ft of timing light hookup. Engine doesn't care what cylinder you index
off of- the answer should be the same. And if it isn't, you learned something
about the precision of your ignition. FWIW- J DeRyke
