Once a year should be fine for rad hose replacement on a frequently-driven
racer. Be sure you use aircraft-quality worm drive hose clamps, not the
Italian fall-apart-in-your-hands stockers. Some guys use two clamps on every
connection. The truly paranoid safety wire the screws on the hose clamps.
Racers don't often use silicone hoses because silicone is notch-sensitive
and if someone over-tightens a hose clamp, the band can cut the soft
silicone. Instead, Gates Green Stripe rubber hose will last thru any condition you
can throw at them.
Don't forget to replace the two short heater hoses up under the dash- if
the heater core is still in your GR-3.
Also don't forget to replace the double-size hose that twists around near
the gearshift lever and connects the 2" water pump inlet to the 1-3/8"
under-car pipe. Ford introduced a twisted dual-size steel tube to replace the
hose. Over time, vibration of the long gearshift rod will wear through the hose,
if its still on your car. This was a factory upgrade in Nov '72 that should
be on every Pantera. Good luck- J Deryke
