That's a diode--a one-way road for electrical current. The fans
originally were grounded via ground wires that ran all the way back into the cabin
and grounded on a lug under the center of the dash. Now, your fans ground
through these diodes straight to the body--much more better idea.
It helps prevent the fans from running after power is removed from them;
it's possible for spinning fans to turn into mini-alternators and generate
power backwards through the system, enough to power your ignition system and
keep the engine running. Diodes prevent that.
