No, you're not an idiot, which only takes simple proof really...

You -asked- this forum for details. :)

If you collapse the spring (make it shorter) you are increasing the  
pressure being applied to the shock to -extend- it, or push it as far  
as it will go lengthwise.

If you are extending the spring, you are reducing the pressure on the  
shock allowing it to sag some which would bring the car -down-.

If you have collapsed the spring as far as you can go (turned the  
adjuster so you -see- all the threads on the -outside- of the spring  
and the spring appears short) then something else may be wrong.

If the spring appears to be the same length as the shock and all the  
threads for the adjuster appear -inside- the coils of the spring,  
you're going the wrong way.
