[DeTomaso] ZF Gear Lube Question

Dear Thomas,


         I was sure that GL4 was the specified lube for the ZF.    That's
what I've used for the last ten years or so in both Panteras.  No known
problems.   The ZF reference book doesn't actually say GL 4 or GL 5.   The
red owners manual makes no mention of it that I can see.   Oh, well.   GL4
or GL5 seems to be OK.

Me too!

I've always heard that it should be GL4, but when Mike said that the 
users manual say GL5 I checked my manual, and it does indeed say SEA 80 
GL5 for US, and Agip F.1 Rotra MP SAE 90 for Europe.

I'm currently using Shell Getriebeöl, SAE 75W-90, which is a fully 
synthetic GL4 transmission oil. I've used Mobilube 1 SHC SAE 75W-90 
before, which is a fully synthetic GL4/GL5 oil, but changed it to the 
Shell oil when there was much debate about GL4/GL5 on the forum.

Both oils worked very well.

Checking the ZF manual they say "mild EP gearbox oil of viscosity class 
SAE 80". They also say SAE 80 oils corresponding to spec MIL-L 2105A, 
which appears to be a mono-grade GL-4.

The Mobilube 1 SHC is marked with MIL-L 2105D, which according to some 
document is multigrade GL-4.
