Absolutely. My set of mechanical scales only cost $250 in 2007, use no 
batteries or wires and are portable. The same type were recommended by Carroll 
Smith for his non-sponsored semi-pro racing programs. Virtually anyone- or 
group- should be able to scare up $250 if they can't quite afford $650. You 
don't need them all the time but when you do, there's just no other way to
