[DeTomaso] Best sounding car ever?

Mike is right; Chris is a nice guy and would gladly talk to anybody about his GT-40. I too will be at Sears Point that weekend so anyone that stops by is welcome to some hospitality in our pit (look for the J&L trailer).

Hope to see some of you there,

Gray

That's GT40 P/1051, which was originally built as a road car, with wire
wheels. It's owned by an acquaintenace of mine named Chris McAllister, who
lives in Indianapolis. He owns the Caterpiller distributorship for the
entire state of Indiana, which is tantamount to owning a money machine, and he's
living right as a result. He has a small but extremely impressive
collection of cars including a '72 Ferrari 312 Formula One car (ex-Niki Lauda), and
a 1970 Porsche 917, original Gulf team car, unrestored and highly original.

He bought the GT40 as a road car, then had it converted to full Gulf
specifications by Racing Icons, complete with 14-inch-wide rear wheels, Gulf
flares, and Gurney-Weslake Eagle heads. Here's some photos from when it was
just completed:

As an aside, here's a great link showing the process of restoring original
GT40s, a non-trivial undertaking in the extreme:

http://www.racingicons.com/gt/index.html

Just keep scrolling from one page to the next using the navigation buttons
at the bottom of each page.

Here's another video from the same event as the link you sent (a hillclimb
in France), of Chris working on the car in the pits.

Chris is the guy with the baseball cap that looks like a grown-up Harry
Potter.

We saw him at the GT40 reunion at Road America last summer; he'll be
driving his McLaren M8F Can-Am car and his GT40 at the upcoming Sonoma Historic
Motorsports Festival at Sears Point, the same weekend as the Reno POCA Fun
Rally (just two weeks away!). He's a bit quiet, but he's a super-friendly,
super-nice guy. If you go to the track after the Fun Rally (and anybody who
lives in California will be driving right past the track on the way home),
stop in and say hello to him!

Mike
