Thanks Jack,
I got it by using pipe thread tape on the screws, building it to a cone shape-- thicker under my washers. It has been sealing for a couple hours now and I have gas to within a couple inches of the top of filler neck.
I had planned on a roll over valve, but didn't think I wanted to wait long enough to research the true operation of the style I think you are referring to. Jeep has a similar style. Will yours close off when car is upright and gas is up into filler neck to a height above valve level? Which means the ball would have to be able to float on gas. I like the one now on E-bay that is brass with 1/4 inch pipe thread but it appears to have a steel ball and would not float.

I have had a gas leak at the factory gas tank vent and thought it was due to poor tension at rivets or bad gasket. SO I removed rivets, taped holes for 10/32 machine screws and inspected what looks to be a good gasket. Reinstalled and now I still can't seem to find a way to get it to not leak--------appears to be leaking around threads. Is there a better than stock gasket that would solve my problem? Thanks for any thoughts you may share.
Use some contact cement or Permatex #2 on both surfaces of the gasket. FWIW, I suggest replacing the whole fitting. I make a steel or aluminum ring that bolts onto the tank and has a hole in the middle for a plastic '80s Ford pickup roll-over valve. Hall sells the same thing for $30. Not only is it a safety device if you go upside down, its all stock & doesn't leak. Run the hose to the air cleaner base. Cheers- J Deryke
