[DeTomaso] NORC Report: Past the Finish Line

Steve Donegan who was at the NORC and a long time orr veteran is a electronics engineer and he's been working on a "Naviquesser", essentially a GPS with programmed computer features that time compensates, provides video and audio features...says he can make it and sell it for a profit for $500 bucks...says it will be ready by September.

Its a tool rally timing experts like you may want to consider.

Yep.  Like I said earlier I just use it as a reference point.  It will get me close to the markers I put out.  I adjust to hit them on time and if that's good I run at whatever speed and average the GPS indicates then.  This is probably the only time a digital meter is better than a needle.  The speedo needle moves too much.  By the way, an old Garmin III + is one of the few units that will read 10ths above 100mph.  Just bought one on eBay for $40.  Also, more people are catching onto the course marking I've been doing over the years so it's getting tough. :)  I need to get some of these rocket scientists around here to get off their asses and design a better system for me.  I have the plan, I just need them to make it work.  Right now the stopwatch still rules.

Michael,
I heard GPS may get you within 1-2 seconds...does that sound right?

It is an old stopwatch and seat of the pants.  Any GPS will only get you in the ballpark.  I use one only as a plus/minus

device regardless of what it says.  The time delay and refresh rates of civilian GPS will guarantee you a solid 10th place.

Preparation and a plan will get you closer.  Very careful driving and luck will get you in the top 3...maybe.

Michael Frazier...more than a handful of 1st places.

Don't get me wrong I'm not taking anything away from the guys who are running it as they are out there and I'm not (yet), but it would sure be more appealing if it was an old stopwatch and seat of the pants.

The navigator calls out the time to each distance. It isn't that difficult to hit each mark by a car length. The guys that are winning are getting within a few feet.
