In 5th gear, the hum of the 351C is just right.  Close your eyes.  Your eyes can deceive you.

Or... navigate the course the day before so you know exactly how long it is.  Record the distance to various markings.  Compute the time to distance.  The navigator calls out the time to each distance.  It isn't that difficult to hit each mark by a car length.  The guys that are winning are getting within a few feet.

It also helps to put flags out every mile or so.

They don't like it when you paint marks on the road.

It's bad sportsmanship to move the other guys flags.
