[DeTomaso] Gas tank woes

Rob,

My engine and tank are out.  I can take some pics if you like.

It's an early car with the wrap-around tank shield like Mike D. described.

And yes, both Mike D. and Goran are correct (of course).  The tank shield
rivets to the firewall, the frame, and the inside wheel house.  It is
mounted totally separate from the tank.  The tank rests on a couple of
pieces of metal attached to the frame.   The strap is the only thing holding
it in place, but the weight of the tank and gasoline does most of the work -
holding it down.

If the tank truly is sagging, it's most likely due to rust - hopefully only
in the tank.

That is what I am trying to figure out. I figured if the tank dropped, I
would be in serious trouble.  Does the shield connect to the tank and is it
possible that the shield would drop but the tank stay still?
