[DeTomaso] MSD Box failure? ???????

So, i have a funny MSD story. While i had the engine bay open prior to the new engine install, i decided to upgrade from a 6A to a 6AL. I *thought* I had correctly duplicated the wiring for the new box exactly.

Yesterday As we tried to start the new engine we noticed that when I turned the ignition to "on", all the pretty wire covering stuff (the plastic slip on stuff) started melting! We quickly turned off the key and disconnected the battery. turns out some idiot had wired the ground from the MSD to the hot on the solenoid! I literally pealed off all the gooey plastic, checked the wires (seemed fine, but hot), and let it cool down for a bit. We then connected it up correctly and, well the video speaks for itself (video here for those that missed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NATXBUWNECQ).

Not sure how long the 6AL will last, but i was pretty impressed that it wasn't fried!!

I bought a couple MSD coils, a less expensive coil (PN 8207) that was about $30, and one that is suppose to be a race coil (PN 8252) for about $120. The $30 coil was labeled "made in China" and the $120 coil was labeled "made in the USA". They were both described as compatable with the 6AL box.

Hey there's a thought.
Perhaps
- the cheap ones are made in China, drop-shipped to a distribution
center and then to customers.
- better ones are made in China, but screened by an acceptance test at
MSD before they go to customers.
- good ones are built by MSD with a quality-controlled vendor chain.
If we knew what the acceptance test was .............?
