The paint-it approach was used as recently as last Summer in F-1. There is
currently a complete ban on on-track testing. Desperate to get some aero
data on their uncompetitive car but not willing to show their results, McLaren
used a thick oil on certain parts of the body during practice, ran a lap or
two, then came in the garage and closed the doors. They turned off the
inside lights and used an ultraviolet light to see the airflow results in the
oil- just as Chuck describes. A quick wipe-down, the doors opened and the car
went back out to run again. Its aid there are no secrets in a billion-dollar
race series but this one lasted almost 8 months before word got out....
magically, the McLaren did improve by season's end. FWIW- J Deryke
