The riveted gutters cover spot welded flanges AFAIK, I don't think you'll be
left with a smooth side that way.

VERY interesting, Matt. It agrees with similar tests done in Sweden a few
years ago using a chase car & camera. One suggestion for more work for your
project; I suspect most of the turbulence and resulting thick boundary layer
along the sides comes from the frontmost section of our rain gutters, which
are only pop-rivited on. Could I talk you into re-running this particular
test with the driver's gutter removed or at least duct-taped smooth? I could
be way-wrong, but maybe a simple front of the gutter removal would make the
smaller scoops efective? Al Bloomberg's record-setting Bonneville pushbutton
had its gutters removed but were never really tested.
