Have you seen that TV show "Pickers"? These guys travel all over the country
(mostly rural areas) and look for signs of potential hidden treasure. They
find all sorts of really cool stuff collectible bicycles, motorcycles, cars,
antique weapons etc. I have seen the show a few times and the one thing I
have found is that very few of the people are unaware of the value off their
"undiscovered" treasures and one reason that many of the items have been
sitting in a barn for twenty years or more is because the people think their
junk really is treasure and often they want way more then the stuff would
be worth if it had been in perfect condition instead off left to rot in a
barn for twenty or thirty years. I have found that the best way to find "
undiscovered treasures " is at estate sales and even good old fashioned
garage sales. I have a real estate license and have a contact with an
attorney that does allot of elder care representation. I have been refereed
to several estates where a elderly person passed away and left their estate
to relatives who live half way across the country and don't even bother to
come and see what was in the house.I had one a few years ago where the
beneficiary was a professor at a college in California that actually asked
to have people hired to come in and clean everything out of the house. This
guy was willing to pay a clean out service Three thousand dollars to
"clean"out a house that had literally thousands of dollars worth of stuff
including valuable art work, crystal, Sterling silver, tools, cases of wine
and unopened single malt scotch , professional carpenters tools, two cars (
Toyota Camry's worth around $5000.00). I told the guy that there was
valuable property (in addition to a full dumpsters worth of junk) and I
arrange for a tag sale company to sell they stuff (they wanted something
like $2500.00 up front and 25% of the revenue) or I would take care of
getting the house cleaned out if I could keep any of the property I wanted .
The guy agreed and saved the $3000.00 clean out fee and I made out great.
There was some real treasure hidden among the junk. No Cobras, Panteras , or
Vincent Black shadows though. The bottom line is that there is allot of
treasure hiding out there but just like panning for Gold you have to sift
through a ton of crap for every Golden nugget you find and you really need
to know your stuff to spot the treasures. Just watch antiques roadshow once
and awhile and you will often see people that have found items worth
hundreds or thousands for a few dollars at garage sales or estate sales. You
also see people who paid $500.00 for something worth $50.00. Half the fun is
in the process of looking. It's a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and
every once in a while you find a real prize.
