Notes-
1)- to torque drilled bolts into the confined space inside a ZF, you'll need a crow-foot socket that matches whatever bolts you use; vendor bolts are mostly hex but some are 12-point, so different sockets may be needed. I wouldn't use stock bolts (drilled at home) 'cause they have hardened heads with serrations under the heads that are designed to bite into softer material. Trouble is, the hardened heads are difficult to drill and the flange you're tightening against is also hard.... so the serrations only decrease the bearing area of the bolt head. Finally, to easily stop the ring gear from rotating while torquing/unloosening, jam a shop rag in the ring/pinion gear mesh.
2)- use real 0.032" dia ss safety wire and real safety wire twisting-pliers. The far-east rip-off copies are pretty cheap nowadays and will last for casual use. Smaller dia wire isn't strong enough and larger is difficult to bend sharply enough.
3)- torque and wire the bolt-heads together in pairs, leading the wire in the 'tighten' direction. Twist the wires between the bolt heads and twist a short 3/4" long 'tail' after the second bolt head.
Good luck, Bud- J DeRyke
