[DeTomaso] radiator fan connection

Fluidyne radiators come with much better, pipe-threaded non-leaking fan
thermostats than stock. Stockers will not work with a Fluidyne. Did you mean
you had the stock thermostat wiring? The stock wiring had no diodes, only a
pair of relays in the lines, so someone has likely messed with the wiring.
Good luck sorting that out with a VOM. If the stock fan relays are still in
there and work, turn them upside-down on their mount studs so the electrical
connections less conveniently mount from the bottom. In the stock position,
there's a small ledge around the relay's cover/base joint that collects water-
which leaks inside and rusts, eventually destroying the relays. They can be
disassembled & cleaned out to extend their life & save a few bucks.
You say you have A 16" fan; one fan isn't enough unless you also have the
stock front-mount fans. And since the radiator core is only 16" thick, its
gonna be difficult to mount. Most of us throw away the stock fans, motors and
their mounts and use dual 14" sucker fans in a shroud behind the rad.
Flexilite makes one that fits perfectly. For maintenence convenience, tilt the rad
forward using 4" long strap-mounts to the top bolts and std. rubber
bushings underneath. Once mounted & wired, the sheet metal top cover for the
radiator can be cut to fit the new smaller opening, or a simple fabricaed cover
can be made of sheet metal.
Do NOT use tie-wraps thru the core to mount anything, even if the rad came
with them. They are much tougher than alunimum core tubes, and vibration
will cause them to saw thru, causing unrepairable water leaks. Good luck, Sue &
