This post is not meant to defend a position or to attack one. It is to
clarify an idea or philosophy. In an earlier post I said it is dependent on
what ones goals are. I am one of the guys that if I became a super rich or
even moderately rich or even just rich I would have a collection of toys
that were related to transport. That includes cars. boats and things that
fly. It starts with sports cars and then goes to boats and includes fixed
wing aircraft and then goes to rotor craft and even lighter then air craft.
I have had very fast boats (offshore race boats) and god willing I will one
day have a big (over 65" sail vessel). If I had the financial means I
would have theses things at the same time. But the way things are going it
appears that I Will be forced to have only one at a
In the course of the past years I have explored many of the alternatives to
autos. Included among these are experimental aircraft. The aircraft that
most interests me are those designed by Burt Rutan and his canard designs
constructed of carbon fibre. Several of his designs have been modified using
jet engines to make small single engine jet air craft. There are also
Rotorway helicopters that are built from kits and there are a group that
have converted these to jet power ( Link
http://www.swanstrom.net/petes/helicopter/index.htm ) These Rotorway
helicopters are converted to jet turbine power using Jet turbine engines
that were designed to make portable power devices to star jet engines. They
originally cost the Government $88,000 and can be purchased for around
$3500.00
They also replaced the belt drive of the rotor which was the single biggest
flaw in the design. ( KISS Aviation <http://www.kissaviation.com/> )
Anyway. My point is that many of the guys that start and complete theses
projects work on them for 10 , 15 and 20 years. Most don't have a helicopter
licences and never plan on getting one. They derive a tremendous
satisfaction from just building this project. Other people want to buy a
project built by an engineer and built better then they could ever done
themselves. I am one of the people who wants to buy one that's been built. I
like modifying it and putting my personal touch on it but I could never wait
ten years to see my project come to fruition.. So as long as every body gets
the part of the project that makes them happy we are all in a position to
n\be satisfied and in many cases meet the goals they would otherwise been
able to meet. So some day I will have a rotor way Jet exec. A Burt Rutan
design with a jet engine, a beautiful 65'+ mono hull or catamaran and maybe
even a house and maybe even a submersible!
Who knows . But as long as I am breathing I will still be trying. I might
even have room for a house!
