I've heard the same claim. It is also my understanding that synthetic oils
by nature have a wider span and hence don't need as much additives to cover
a wide range. When I used mineral oil for my first car I used to go with
20W50 or 10W40. Pretty much all the synthetics around here start at 5 or
even 0. I'd still prefer using whatever has an ending with 50 if I was
putting it in a Cleveland.

It has always been my understanding that the wider the range in
viscosity, the more additives are required. The more additives required,
the less actual "oil" in the oil. I try to avoid a range wider then 10w30.
