<< The event where they raced cross country was called the cannonball>>

Back in the early days (1971) when Car and Driver was doing it, the full
name was:

"The Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash"

If you ever get a chance read the Brock Yates articles in CD, very very good
stuff.

It's not a race. It was just luck that Bob was the first one to pull into
Miami. There is no winner or loser and no one keeps time. It's just driving
from city to city and having a big party every night ( and some years they
throw the cars on a jet and move to another country or continent like this
year where they started in europe and ended in New York) The event where
they raced cross country was called the cannonball (like in the movie of the
same name) I am not aware of any incidents or fatalities associated with
this event. Allot of the cars are not even sports cars. I think they had a
customized VW bus in the 2009.
