Not to mention that he was rear ended in Florida and had to stop for
repairs.

Patrick,
I'm sure it is allot of fun for the participants. I am friends with Bob
Levitt who is a POCA member and a list subscriber ( he is also a member of a
local vintage car club we have formed here in NY. He was not able to
participate in the 2010 Gumball event because he could not raise the $45,000
entrance fee. In 2009 he was able to put together some sponsors but with the
economy in the state it is in unless you are a major celebrity that can
attract a major sponsor you are on your own. There are people who can afford
spending $45,000 for a week long party but the cost excludes most regular
people. It is not a race there are no prizes or awards and it doesn't
support any charitable cause. It's just a bunch of celebrities and rich
wannabe celebrities demonstrating their ability to spend an obscene amount
of money partying at a string of the worlds most expensive hotels or
private estates (like the Playboy Mansion last year) in their extremely
expensive sports cars ( like the Bugatti Veyron) Admittedly this description
of the gumball contains many generalizations (for example Bob Levitt is not
a celebrity wannabe and he drove his Pantera which is not an extremely
expensive sports car) in fact that's what made Bob's participation so cool.
He is a regular guy driving a 40 year old quasi exotic and he fit right in
with the crowd of automobiles many of which had a cost of $1,000,000 plus.
The icing on the cake so to speak was that Bob was the first participant to
cross the finish line in Miami. So despite the fact that it was not
officially a race. To drive from Los Angeles to Miami in a week in a group
of cars that included the most expensive and purportedly fastest production
car in the world and to not only complete the 3000 mile trip but to be
first across the finish line was a proud moment for Pantera owners around
the globe!
