Original recommendation is 10W50, going to a whatever W30 is a rather big
step in viscosity IMO. I normaly run 5W50 but currently I'm running 5W40 and
I notice a lower pressure reading at operating temp already.

Also, to clarify: A 10W30 oil doesn't get thicker with rising temp, it's as
thick as a cold 10 oil when cold and as thick as a hot 30 oil when hot. That
means pretty water-like at engine temperature.

If I understand the multi-grade oil ratings correctly, the 10W30 should have
the same consistency as a 10 weight oil when it is cold and the consistency
of a 30 weight oil when it is hot. I have been using their 10W40 oil and
have not noticed any oil related problems.

Won't a 10W30 oil be very runny for an old Cleveland at operating temp?

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, our oils contain good ZDDP levels and
provide extremely good anti-wear protection for flat tappet cam and lifter
protection. In your Cleveland I would recommend the 10W30, it contains 1200
ppm phosphorus a significant level so additional wouldn't be necessary.
