[DeTomaso] Pulling the camshaft out of a 351C

Hey it should be easy, right??
And it's the very last thing I have to take out.
Pushrods and lifters are on the bench.
Waterpump and front cover are on the bench.
Timing gear is on the bench.
Thrust plate is on the bench.
15" threaded rod is screwed into the camshaft so it's really easy to handle.
The camshaft (with the wiped #6E lobe) is turning the distributor nicely
so it's running free in its bearings.
It pulls nicely to disengage the distributor gear
Comes out 3 3/4" out and starts to engage the next bearing
(I'm pretty sure and it feels like that putting a finger down the
lifter bores)
Comes out about another 1/8" and stops.
It rotates freely but won't budge farther out, with hand pressure.
It goes back into original position easily and still turns nicely there.
(so I haven't screwed the bearings - and it's been very gentle treatment)
Tried it again with a little moly wiped onto the bearings - no change
and it didn't feel dry anyway.
So could you all point out what stupid $##@$%^ thing I might be doing
here???
I haven't pulled anything but overhead cams in 40 years but there
shouldn't be anything more.
tks, I sure hope
dave
PS I didn't find a oil slinger on the crank - is it kind of optional?
