I did as you mentioned: flashlight to inspect down the distributor shaft.  I could see the cam gear but not the timing chain - or any debris.  I don't think I have the stock timing chain as the previous owner undertook an extensive re-build.  
 
Last year when I replaced my mechanical fuel pump I recall reaching in with a few fingers and "inspecting" the chain.  If memory serves, it was nice and tight and was of the double-chain variety.
 
Anyway, the neighbours are probably up now ... so it's time to go reset my timing and hope she comes to life.

Been there, done that.  While you have the distributor out and you've
crawled over the top of the engine, take a flashlight and peek down the
hole toward the front of the block at the cam gear.  You can just barely
see a bit of it.  In my case, it was positioned just right to see the
plastic gear teeth had come off the aluminum sprocket.  You may need to
look and bump the engine around a little at at time to inspect it.  (Of
course that totally throws off re-timing it using Jack's mark-it
method).  But in my case, the distributor gear was just fine, but the
stock original timing chain had jumped several teeth due to the stock
cam gear losing the plastic tooth coating over the aluminum sprocket.

OH!  And by the way..... how did the track session come out?
