Erik,

Before you pull your distributor, check the timing chain by rotating the 
balancer back and forth...take up slack, go the other direction until you take 
up slack...couple of times and you'd get the hang of it.  Anything around 3-4 
degrees of movement is OK.  6-8 and you are getting into slipped chain 
areas.......

If your chain is new....or fairly new....double roller type, then proceed with 
the distributor as a first thing..... but check your timing first!  Beware of 
slipped timing marks too on the balancer!!!!   If you suspect it, use the old 
thumb over #1 spark plug hole to determine closet to TDC.
