FWIW, for a mild street engine (under 500 hp), the Powerjection setup
may satisfy your requirements for affordability and performance. For a
novice mechanically inclined person, with some experience in tuning an
engine, this unit may be fun to play with. However the old adage, "You
get what you pay for" holds true with this unit.
At SEMA last year, Garry Grimes (our engine builder Grimes Twister
Engines) spoke to the Powerjection folks and decided to evaluate their
units for a couple of projects on which we were working. In his testing
he found that the "windows" of variables which are available to tune the
system are limited (as in comparison to the FAST or Electromotive systems).
If you are looking for streetable 500 hp or above performance, the
Powerjection III system throttle body (750cfm with 52 lb/hr injectors)
is too small. You will have to opt for the larger components if available.
The components of the Powerjection system looked "cheap" compared to the
components we use on engines that we guarantee. When we were doing dyno
testing on a mule engine, one of the units failed. We had to order a
new one to complete our evaluation.
Also, consider yourself lucky if you can find somebody to talk to if you
need help. We couldn't. I would suggest trying to call their technical
support before you buy to see if they have improved (really made
available) their "support".
If you are evaluating EFI and ignition control engine management
systems, take the advice of others that have posted on this subject and
find a "tuner" locally which you can trust, and get their opinion on
what to buy, with of course getting references and costs they would
charge for their services. There are a lot of "jack legs" out there
that profess to be experts, so do your due diligence before you commit.
