FWIW,
 
My OEM lower shafts are exactly 5/8 inches (15.875mm) in  diameter. This is 
within .00492 inches of 16mm ....... my guess is it is a 16mm  shaft.
 
This means the factory turned the OEM shafts to a smaller diameter  to use 
a 14mm nut. MAP must also have turned turned some  (early) shafts to a 
smaller diameter to thread them for a 9/16  nut.
 
MAP now threads the shaft without reducing the diameter and uses a  5/8-18 
nut. This eliminates two turning operations on each shaft and leaves more  
meat on the shaft ends for drilling/tapping the zerk fittings.
