The mystery deepens.
 
I have two recently purchased lower shafts from MAP. The shafts are  
threaded 5/8-18.
 
5/8 = 0.625 inches
9/16 = .5625 inches
14mm = 0.551 inches 
 
Neither 14mm x 2.0 nor 14mm x 1.5 nuts will thread on a 9/16-12 or  9/16-18 
bolt by hand.
 
A 5/8 bolt will go over a 14mm bolt without  threading.
