[DeTomaso] WINDSHIELD OPINIONS NEEDED

Dear Robert,

Years ago, my original windshield cracked in a big way. I
obtained a proper replacement and took it to the glass shop. I was curious
as to how they removed the glass. They showed me their windshield remover:
a smallish Mexican guy with tennis shoes. He padded up the console with
pillows and blankets. He positioned himself on them and placed his feet on
the windshield. I am sure that experience had taught them the optimum
placement. The windshield is removed by the adroit application of foot
power to push it out. It came out in one piece despite the big crack.

With the removal of the old glass they pointed out that I had some
rust in the lower right corner. This wasn't bad. It wasn't visible from
the outside. The car had been garaged it's whole life and only had about
18,000 miles on it. We stopped the installation and had the rust fixed
prior to completion.

Now, if your priority is economy and simplicity, then I would say
that you could probably leave it alone. One sees Panteras rusting in other
areas much more often than one sees rust around the exterior of the
windshield.

If, however, your priority is rust eradication at this point and
you're prepared for the possibility of a broken glass on removal and the
bitter sweet discovery of no rust, then press on because (how many miles are
on this car?) you won't know until you look and you can *probably* get the
glass out, inspect, repair if necessary and *re-use* the gasket when you
re-install. It is a calculated gamble.

For what it's worth, Chuck Engles

Subject: [DeTomaso] WINDSHIELD OPINIONS NEEDED

Dear Friends ,

Most of you have responded to my many questions and I have always been most
 appreciative.

As you know the Gumball Pantera was hit in the rear the last day of the
Rally .For the past two months the car has been undergoing inch by inch
restoration and repair. In speaking with the craftsman today he feels that
we
should not remove the windshield. He sees absolutely no rust in or around
the
windshield.I feel that the windshield should be removed.I think my
craftsman/bodyman is afraid that the windshield will break on removal.

The $600.00 question is . Should I tell him to remove it or not ? I would
like to leave it to a vote from the group as I trust the opinions of my
friends here on the list.

Regards to All,
Robert
