U.S. flat-plane V-8 cranks were always aftermarket, and they had one great 
advantage: they're simpler and cheaper to make as billets than 'normal' 
3-plane cranks. In the late '80s aftermarket crank makers got the technology to 
make both non-twisted and twisted-plane forged cranks, and almost 
immediately, the flat-plane V-8 crank disappeared from racing here. They had balancing
