 Now that Mike mentions it, I did have the trunnion bearing replaced when I had the motor rebuilt 5 or 6 years ago.

The quality of the components in the linkage probably had much to do with 

it; it could also be attributed to the (unknown to me, and maybe unknown to 

Tom?) gear lube.   The linkage was stock, but I think it may have had a new 

trunnion bearing, recent lubrication etc.
