I'd sand it smooth first.  There are a lot of electric sanders that accept different shape small attachments.  If you try to polish a surface first, it takes forever.

Hello Friends ,

I would like to begin polishing my ZF Transaxle since it is currently out
of the car .The ZF is 37 years old.The outer Casing has what looks like
stress  marks or scratches on top.

Does anyone have any hints on how to polish to a mirror finish  ?  I really
do not want to take the whole unit apart.

What tools are needed?

What sandpaper to start with ? Emory paper ? Wet Sand ?

What air tool is best to use ?
