I hear ya Bro'. Your right about Greg running a shorter gear.....The problem is locking UP the gear with all that HP without draging the clutch with that much HP and that much gear...

Plenty of data out there on 800-1500 HP engines but making them LAST longer then a few WOT runs is the key....As I understand it you want to be able to enjoy the Pantera on the weekends, try and bust my ass at Silver State <grin> before 2015 and I am saying you ain't gonna EVER do that in this life unless you do it soon as I am retiring the Pantera before I think anyone is close! ;-)

Being a mechanical engineer in a prior life, I rarely abuse hardware. Basically, I'm just repeating what I heard in the past, that the ZF is good for 800 HP. Of course, there has to be more to it than that. There are probably several failure modes ranging from catastrophic to damaging synchros or gears so you can't shift. I think Esakoff was destroying the ring and pinion gears.

As a further note, Lloyd said the 3.22 ring and pinion are bullet proof because the pinion gear is bigger. I think Esakoff was maybe running lower than stock gears? That implies a smaller (and weaker) pinion gear. I'd have to ask Lloyd, but that might explain some of the failures.

ZF the weak link?

No f'iway.

But maybe if you go airborne and come down on the road in gear and twist an input shaft but otherwise unless you get stoopid and slam gears or you are Gregg Esakoff or a Tazmanian Devil ;-) the ZF gears will outlast everything on or in the Pantera........ I know Ken and I love Ken but Ken is never going to drive like Greg Esakoff because he's too old. ;-)
And so am I.

Ken mentioned that the ZF might be the weak link ( and the expensive repair)
if one were to install an engine with over 600 hp into a Pantera. I was
wondering what transaxle ford is using in the new GT-40. I'm sure it is
priced out of this world but just out of couriosity does any one have info
about it? Also are the BMW parts for the ZF that I have read about stronger
or just more expensive ?
