[DeTomaso] Undercoating removal?

a sharp blow with a hammer shattered the frozen undercoat and you moved on
to the next area" I think pounding on a car made of old tuna cans is a bad
idea. Ok the car is not really made from old tuna cans but did Detomaso ever
use the cheapest softest metal. How many of you went to drill a hole some
where and just about sent the bit, chuck and drill through the hole you
where trying to drill.

"Its just a miserable, dirty, labor-intensive chore no matter how its done"
I kinda liked it. I remember doing my car and what I liked about it was the
progress made in short time and the unveiling of the car underneath the
gooo. I do remember the occasional smell of burning flesh and hair when hot
undercoating would find its way down the back of my shirt or drip on my
forearms. Cathy found it worked great for waxing her legs on a few
occasions.

I used a good heat gun and a couple of very flexible putty knifes. I was
really surprised how well the undercoating had protected the chassis as I
found virtually no rust anywhere except for some of the exposed areas that
cleaned up nicely with a little wire wheel work. Acrylic lacquerer thinner
works really well for final clean up but be warned it should only be used in
extremely well ventilated areas with PPE, personal protection equipment,
like heavy chemical gloves, glasses, mask etc.

Cheers

Paul
