[DeTomaso] 4V Head Value

Thanks Chuck. $250 seems to be the number for now.

Here is what I "think":
My 351, with mild bowl clean-up porting, solid flat lifter cam, street gas,
made 421HP at 6300RPM; peak VE of 1.03. I think that is pretty good for a
low-buck engine. Frankly, I prefer to build the low-buck engines: It hurts
a lot less when it goes wrong.

I have a buddy that had a 383 stroker cleve built by Kuntz (sp?) with a full
solid roller cam and jessel rocker set up. He ran on race gas. I don't
remember what the CR was, 11.something I think. Kuntz preferred to use the
open chamber heads. It made 605HP.

I think, however, you will squeeze more out of closed chambered heads on
street gas. Modern gas needs the quench area to maximize swirl and minimize
detonation onset.

421hp on 351CID is plenty good though.

I have 383 and 393 strokers in process on open chamber heads. The short
blocks are complete. The heads are going out next week for assembly. We'll
see what these do this summer. If it all goes well, the next one will be a
383 stroker on closed chamber heads. We'll see what that does next year I
suppose.

Dear Tony,

Without any market review and based on my own perusal of good used
4V quench heads, I would say that the range would be $200 to $250. That
ain't gospel, just best guess.

                  Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

PS: I understand that open chamber heads can make reasonable power although
less than quench heads. It seems that "everybody" uses quench heads. Is
anybody using open chamber heads in healthy modified 351 Clevelands or are
they relegated to stock rebuilt lower compression engines??

What would you say fair value currently is for a set of used, stock, bare,
good condition, Open-Chamber 4V Cleve Heads?
