Not only what Chris described with his inadvertant insulating of the surge 
tank, but a few owners in the past have used far too much teflon pipe-tape 
on the threads going into the block, and then found spotty temp readings due 
to partially ungrounding the sender with the thread tape. Two complete turns 
on the threads of any pipe fitting is plenty; more sometimes causes 
problems. One guy then SOLDERED a ground wire to the brass temp sender body to 
solve HIS ground problem! Not too sure what 600F soldering temps might do to a 
sender, but it worked for him... FWIW- J DeRyke
