FWIW some say it's a good idea to shift into a forward gear (I was taught
to use 2nd gear), prior to shifting into reverse.
>> Shifting into ANY SYNCHRONIZED gear prior to shifting into reverse (a NON-synchronized gear) stops all of the
transmission gears from turning, including the input shaft. This assumes that the clutch disc is fully disengaged.
If it is not fully disengaged, then, as soon as you shift out of the synchronized gear, the transmission gears will
start turning and grinding of reverse will occur. I use first gear instead of second, as an effort to "save the
       second gear synchro".
