[DeTomaso] GT40 COSTS Re: more on rear tire width

About 800 lbs lighter than a stock Pantera. 3200lbs vs 2400lbs.

I know of John, but have not met him nor seen his car. His car is not a
Superformance car.
I believe (I am not absolutely sure) that it is a DRB GT40.

The Superformance GT40 is a very stable handling car from my limited
perspective and limited driving ability. Put your foot down, break the rear
tires loose and you can calmly hold it on the road with one hand and the
rear end squirms around until you get enough traction. You never feel like
it is going to 'get away from you'.

At Road America last summer (45th Anniversary Reunion), we got to go on the
track several times and at one point, the pace car pulled off and I put my
foot down on the front straight. 3rd out of the corner, 4th up the hill with
the tires breaking loose over the bumps, into 5th. I was nervously looking
around at the gauges trying to see if anything was wrong since I had never
kept my foot in it for that long... I glanced over at the speedometer (a
Speedhut electronic version that was calibrated between two mile markers)
and I saw it heading past 175 towards 180. And the car was still pulling
hard. I chickened out since I'd never been that fast and there was a corner
coming towards me.
Turned out, there was plenty of room (the brakes work very well, thank you)
and I could have kept my foot in it longer.
Never got another chance to do that though.
Dennis Olthoff told me he was nearing 190 with his GT40 on the same straight
while he was racing.

The two cars are very different though in final drive... Olthoff's car has a
3:77 final drive; mine has a 4:22 with a .642 5th. His car can theoretically
go much faster than mine... With my tires size I'm limited to 206mph at
redline. His is probably more like 240mph.... I like my tire smoking 1st
gear demo mode though... and where are you going to go that fast?
Oh, yeah... of course... BBORR or Silver State or...

:-)
